Proteinuria refers to the presence of excess protein in the urine. Proteins, primarily albumin, are usually retained in the bloodstream during the filtration process in the kidneys. When the glomeruli, the filtering units of the kidneys, are damaged, they allow proteins to leak into the urine. Persistent proteinuria can be a sign of kidney disease.
